SPECIAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Grant Proposal Requests for Childhood Obesity Related Research

For 2000/20001 Academic Year

Supported by

The Institute of Nutrition

The University of North Carolina System

And

East Carolina University

The mission of the ION is to assist the University of North Carolina System to promote the nutritional well being of North Carolinians through education, research and communication.

A grant program, designed to help strengthen our nutrition related research and encourage intra- and inter-institutional collaborative research exists.  The Institute identified childhood obesity as a special focus for the 2000/2001-grant program. However, there were no submissions in this category by the March 10, 2000 deadline.  Some funds were held back in anticipation of this announcement.

During the summer, 2000, the Institute supported the development of a registry of ECU researchers interested in or involved in childhood obesity research.  This was part of the University of North Carolina System cooperative Program “Children’s Healthy Life Skills Initiative—Childhood Obesity.”

The ECU Institute of Nutrition Directors had set aside $9,000 of  $70,000 available in the year 2000-2001, to be able to fund project(s) focused on childhood obesity prevention or treatment, between October 31, 2000 and June 30, 20001.

The usual policies governing research grants in nutrition and nutrition related fields  (Form IN-9000) would be followed with this special call except that the proposals should be submitted directly to the ECU Chair of the Grant Program.  Copies of the application form are available by contacting Elouise Miller (emiller@email.unc.edu) and at http://intranet.ecu.edu/nuhm/institute/main.htm (the Web page for the Institute of Nutrition)
